In a medium where the producer is king, losing your main man behind the boards can have devastating results. Just ask Motown hip-hop act Slum Village, whose highly praised 2000 debut drew most of its props for Jay Dee's inventive neo-soul soundscapes. Jay is now departed, and to say he left things a mess is hardly an understatement. Trinity drags from track to heavily blunted track like a doped-up Tribe Called Quest, vainly searching for the group's warm and soulful vibe of yesteryear. Occasionally T3 and Baatin (plus guest rhymer Elzhi) stumble upon it--check the deserved hit "Tainted"--but most of the album...
