On their vibrant debut LP, the six-man hip-hop outfit Jurassic 5 -- MCs Chali 2NA, Zaakir, Akil and Marc 7, and DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark -- breathe new life into old-school hip-hop. Dusty samples abound, thumping drums burrow deep, and the rappers chant in unison with barbershop-quartetlike precision. But J5 are not some nostalgic novelty act -- they're the big cats of the set-to-blow-up West Coast underground, a place where innovation is key. Cut and Nu-Mark, who produce most of the tracks, take ill beats mined from the deepest of crates and tweak them into dirty-funk masterpieces.
