Much of the strength of Narrow Stairs lies in the varied songwriting. The band shifts easily from No Sunlight, a punchy and concise pop song awash in layers of guitar, to martial drums on You Can Do Better Than Me, to a deceptively jaunty guitar lick on Your New Twin Sized Bed as Gibbard addresses a lonely someone who has given up on finding companionship. It's by no means a cheery album, but Narrow Stairs shows Death Cab for Cutie has overcome its major-label jitters...
